Zero Stiffness Tensegrity Structures

Tension members with a zero rest length allow the construction of tensegrity structures that are in equilibrium over a continuous range of positions and thus exhibit mechanism-like properties; equivalently, they have zero stiffness. The zero-stiffness modes are not internal mechanisms, as they involve first-order changes in member length, but are a direct result of the use of the special tensio...

On Zero Stiffness

Zero stiffness structures have the remarkable ability to undergo large elastic deformations without requiring external work. Several equivalent descriptions exist, namely i) continuous equilibrium, ii) constant potential energy, iii) neutral stability and iv) zero stiffness. Each perspective on zero stiffness provides different methods of analysis and design. This paper reviews the concept of z...

Spin glass stiffness in zero dimensions

A unique analytical result for the Migdal–Kadanoff hierarchical lattice is obtained. The scaling of the defect energy for a zero-dimensional spin glass is derived for a bond distribution that is continuous at the origin. The value of the ‘stiffness’ exponent in zero dimensions, y0 = −1, corresponds to the value also found in one dimension. This result complements and completes earlier findings ...

Elastic-Stiffness Coefficients of Titanium Diboride

Using resonance ultrasound spectroscopy, we measured the monocrystal elastic-stiffness coefficients, the Voigt C ij, of TiB2. With hexagonal symmetry, TiB2 exhibits five independent C ij: C 11, C 33, C 44, C 12, C 13. Using Voigt-Reuss-Hill averaging, we converted these monocrystal values to quasiisotropic (polycrystal) elastic stiffnesses. Briefly, we comment on effects of voids. From the C ij...

Effect of Rotation and Stiffness on Surface Wave Propagation in a Elastic Layer Lying Over a Generalized Thermodiffusive Elastic Half-Space with Imperfect Boundary

The present investigation is to study the surface waves propagation with imperfect boundary between an isotropic elastic layer of finite thickness and a homogenous isotropic thermodiffusive elastic half- space with rotation in the context of Green-Lindsay (G-L model) theory. The secular equation for surface waves in compact form is derived after developing the mathematical model. The phase velo...
